Lois

Welcome to the podcast, More to Life with Faith and Lois.

Faith

I’m Faith

Lois

And I’m Lois.

Faith

Our podcast explores life’s many transitions that inspire and daunt us.

Lois

Faith, it is great to be with you.

Faith

It is indeed, and this is going to be a fun podcast today.

Lois

It really is, especially after last week’s podcast when we focused on disillusionment. It actually required some thought on my part to re-examine an area of my life that needed some refreshing and I’ve taken ownership of a new venture that I’m working on life coaching as a much needed change in my life rather than not measuring up to what I used to be. And that was a disillusionment that I felt was like starting to take control instead. I tried to use what we talked about in our podcast to say, no, this may be a jumping off part to go someplace different.

Faith

That’s excellent.

Lois

Yes. So our podcast help all of us in including me. So we would love to hear what you think about our podcast and hope that you’re willing to share them with someone. If you would just give them your podcast app and have them find More to Life with Faith and Lois. And if you’d like our latest information, you can sign up our weekly newsletter on our website. It’s www.moretolifewithfaithandlois.com. You know, when we started our podcast more than a year and a half ago, our very first podcast asked the question, how do you bring your dreams to life?

Faith

I remember and it was really fun. It was, we were all excited about starting the podcast and we decided to do about the dream cause it was our dream. It was, and we were bringing it to life.

Lois

And here we are. So today on Episode 86 Transition, we’re going to talk about the impact of dreams. So we’re going to dip our toes into how important these dreams are to move forward in life.

Faith

And they are, because whether you have a waking dream or you have a sleeping dream, your dreams are all valuable. They’re telling us something and they’re expressing something within you, within all of us that we need to listen and not ignore it because so many good things can come up out of them.

Lois

When we dream about how our lives can open up, it’s really, really exciting because you give yourself space to believe that you are on the journey to doing something or being with someone or living somewhere that maybe you had never imagined before.

Faith

Yes, it’s, it’s opening up our imagination and out of our imagination comes our creativity and out of our creativity comes a vision. Out of that of our vision comes at the possibility of what could become. And we walk by those moments in time and say, Oh yeah, that’s nice, but, and we put a little button on the end and then we never grab hold of it. So what we will really want to encourage you today is to be more aware, to be more alert to those nudgings, to those dreams that you might have at night or during the day. To help you begin to say, I want to listen because there’s something there for me.

Lois

So that next distraction that may pop in your head right now, as you’re listening, we’re going to ask you to set it aside. Anything that will trip you up, including a person, you name it, because often the dream is the difference between sinking and swimming. Oh, that’s so good. So let’s start swimming a little bit today. If you don’t mind. And Faith, we love dreams. I know that. But share the role that dreams play in your life.

Faith

Oh, dreams have been so significant. Both my waking and my sleeping dreams, and I learned to listen to them a long time ago through some mentors that said, faith, listen to your dreams. And I always kind of ignored them, but they are messengers. They’re the messengers of our subconscious, of our spirit, of our mind, of our lives. And they’re telling us something. And I always tell my clients, if you want some free therapy, get a dream journal and record your dreams because there is a wealth, there’s sometimes weeks and even months worth of therapy that’s in your dreams if you’ll just listen to them. And so that’s the first encouragement is to make sure that you honor them and listen to them. Many cultures throughout the world. So we’ll spend time every single morning and sit together as a family and share the dreams that they had because they know how beneficial it is to their development and to their growth and to actually drawing the family together more as a unit. And so here in our Western culture we’ve been dismissive of something that is very rich within us.

Lois

I don’t know what it was for me, but as I was growing up, I felt that I couldn’t dream, that I couldn’t dream out loud or tell anybody that, that I had to be a pragmatist. And yet starting at the age of nine or 10, I would go into my bathroom and I would close the door and I would pull up the step stool and in front of the mirror I would be Carol Merrill. And you might remember her from let’s make a deal. And I would have door number one or door number two or door number three. Now I didn’t look like Carol Merrill, but in my head that was a dream that I had as a little kid. And so I didn’t end up getting on, let’s make a deal. But I did end up pursuing communications and broadcasting and became a news anchor and a reporter and a talk show host. So in one way, that dream that I did week after week after week in front of the mirror being Carrol, I became Lois. But I did it in a different way. So it’s funny how sometimes those little dreams in those things we do, like when I watched my brothers play baseball in the back with a fake, you know, the crowd and then hitting and standing on podiums and all of that. And then they pursued athletic dreams and whatever dream it is you pursue, sometimes those little games you play as a kid can set you up.

Faith

Oh, they certainly do. Who you really are comes out as a child of who you are and will become. That’s why it’s so important not to dismiss or put to put down what children do because that core of them is emerging. It’s happening. I did similar things. So yeah, my dad was a preacher and when nobody was around, I used to go over to the church and stand behind the pulpit and I’d preach and – I was just like, I was preaching. I was probably, you know, seven years old I was preaching. But what that developed in, what was really in me was I love to speak and I love to express myself. So all of those things are dreams that are trying to emerge and we don’t wanna. We don’t want to push those down.

Lois

Something to think about as we’re doing our podcast today. What would you dream if you knew you couldn’t fail?

Faith

I know. And one of the key things that always comes up is money. Money is such a huge factor of, well I would if I had the money, I would if whatever. And so I tell my clients, boy, I want you to, if you had 5 million in the bank, what would you do? And they begin to Dream, Oh, if I had 5 million in the bank, well then I would. And that’s where you want to get to because you want to get rid of the obstacles so that you can pave the way for that door to open and not put the, but I can’t because as a tagline, because it doesn’t belong there, dreams are meant to be an expression of what is within you.

Lois

Very, very exciting. So in our podcast, in the next few minutes, we would love to inspire you with the belief that these dreams, these visions that we all have for ourselves and for the community and the world in which we live, they matter and they can become reality. So this is Episode 86 transition, the Impact of Dreams. So our first question to you would be, what’s stopping you?

Faith

That’s really good. And the biggest one that usually comes up is I’m scared to death. I’m afraid. Well what if I fail? What if I mess up? What would people think? You know, getting into that whole thing and then feeling that heaviness of kind of, Ugh, it’s a lot of work. And then we become apathetic towards it and that’s where we, you lose the spark and you lose the fire and that’s not what a dream has meant to do. I think sometimes when we have a dream or we have an idea or an imagination of something we would like to accomplish, we imagine it only one way and think it has to be that the reality is that’s there to tell you there’s something stirring within you that wants to be experienced. It might not look exactly like that, but it’s taking you to it. And so be broader, bigger strokes, bigger strokes in the fact that, what’s your imagining? You know, I want to be an astronaut. If you’re 60 years old, you’re not going to get on a rocket and go to the moon. I hate to break it to you, but that’s a reality. But if you want to be an astronaut, what is it about being an astronaut that inspires you, that awakens you? That’s your dream.

Lois

And one of the key things you’re hearing from both of us right now is this is about your vision and your dream. So when you have naysayers who will come in and doubt you or disagree with you, that that shouldn’t be what your dream is. Those are the obstacles really to move aside because now if it’s a real one, like you’re 60 and want to be an astronaut, that’s true. You know, maybe you should listen to somebody, but I doubt if most people are taking that tact at that point. But for the most part, as you’re getting into this idea of a dream and a vision, listen to yourself and be careful how to share, when to share, because don’t let somebody tamp it down before you have a chance to even find out if it’s a possibility. I know.

Faith

And if somebody does, you know, put water on it, just say, well I probably needed a little water. I’ll reflect on that. But I’m going to continue to pursue what I want to see in my future here because we don’t know what’s going to unfold. And great dreams have been fulfilled by not being stopped.

Lois

So where do your dreams come to you? I know where your dreams come to you, Faith. I meant to not say shower. That’s where yours come!

Faith

Oh so many of them. So many of them. And I actually have, it was given to me as a gift and I love it. And it’s a little waterproof pad and pencil that you hang in your shower and you can take the notes now and you rip them up and it’s fabulous because it’s really get them – you can purchase those now. And it helps because the reason the shower is a place of roof, it’s the quiet reflective place. You’re with your thoughts and your thinking and your, it just becomes almost rote and you know, you know what to do about taking your shower. So in the process of that, your mind is free. Your spirit is free to imagine beyond what you’re actually doing.

Lois

So what kind of exercise do you do? For me, because I love to bike ride. That’s where a lot of my visions come when I’m thinking about what my next step is going to be in life. And that’s what I’m referring to as a vision. But I see these things as I’m riding because for the same reason you’re talking about, it’s wrote, I know where I’m going. And some people do it when they’re running. Some people do it when they’re shooting hoops or just working out. But it gives you this place where you’re on a different level, you’re physically doing something and your mind somehow is set free.

Faith

Exactly, exactly. And it’s so usually when you’re alone and you have those moments. I had one of the greatest dream visions waking visions I’ve ever had going down Sixth Avenue for about four miles and it changed my life and I was on the highway and oftentimes being on the highway, because again, it’s road, it’s something you know to do and you’re not thinking and all when something opens up and it was a beautiful vision and it came to life, it changed my life and it changed many other people’s lives as well.

Lois

So when you’re talking about dreams, ask yourself the question, you know, what do you believe about yourself? We talked before about where you have intention, you know where you’re looking forward often will result in what you want. And so for me, if I actually believe in my head that I can do what I set my mind to, I will do it. If I suffer under the doubts and worry about that and put that in the forefront, then I won’t go anywhere. But if I actually say I can do this and move forward on it, even when I hit obstacles, it’s a different mindset as I’m moving forward.

Faith

That’s so true. You have to change how you think when you have a dream, when you’re inspired, because you said a few moments ago about how the naysayers will come in and try to be the I call them the snatchers, dream snatchers. I will take it away and no, if you have it, it’s yours and don’t let it be taken away. Let it open up, let it become and see how it unfolds for you.

Lois

And it’s pretty perfect that we’re talking about dreams in this episode 86 the Impact of Dreams. So as we discuss dreams, what would happen if you could imagine doing the dream that’s in your head? What would you experience? And I know for me when I start thinking about what would look like for me to be doing x, this dream, I start having relief. I know this is what I want to do. And then that relief turns into joy. Like I want to think about myself in that place. And that’s a really good exercise, by the way. If you are thinking about what you want to do, vision yourself, actually doing it. Envision, I guess.

Faith

It’s so good. I mean you, you, you need to begin to actually see yourself as you just said, doing it. And then what would be the steps you need to take to actually have that happen? For instance, if you see yourself as an author and you see yourself writing this great book that’s been in your mind forever, see yourself doing that, but are there some preliminary steps you need to take? Do you need to maybe go to a few writing classes? Do you need to talk, be in an author’s group? What are some of the things that you could do to help keep that inspiration growing and building and developing so that that creativity can actually come forth.

Lois

As you’re getting through these steps, which is so exciting. Ask yourself also what brings you joy. Because if you’re looking to figure out what it would be like to imagine doing it and you get joy, so what does bring you joy? And I think as we’ve been working our way through all of these podcasts, the biggest joy that’s happening for me right now is being aware and that fun. It is so much fun. I used to, I think I was a little afraid of it. Like if I’m too aware am I become too sensitive? But this idea of being awake, being aware has really turned things for me. So that suddenly is like when I’m awake and when I’m aware the dream is ever present in front of me.

Faith

Yeah. And it’s more tangible. It begins to be something I can actually reach it. It’s when we become unaware when we get in that kind of, I’m muffled place in life that we don’t hear an experience as clearly as we should be, that we lose sight of what is really there for us.

Lois

When we’re able to kind of take our mind also off of ourselves and we invest in other people, whether we’re helping others or whether we’re empathetic. All those things we’ve talked about. That’s another piece that brings me joy that allows me then to put down some of the guard I have so that I can see a dream before me. And then ask yourself what drives you? And that helps set up your dream as well. Because if what drives you is to make a lot of money and that’s your, what’s driving you, are you looking in terms of your dream as to doing something that will allow you to achieve that? Because sometimes what drives us isn’t where our dream is. And so we have to kind of figure out how to mesh those together. Such as you said before, I’m 60 and I want to be an astronaut. Well, something isn’t meshing there. So figure out what it is that drives you and align your dreams with what drives you.

Faith

Exactly. And to live fully and to live completely means to bring in balance. So even if it is that you want to have financial gain and that’s what you’re headed for and that is your goal, that is your dream. Where’s the balance in it? Because if you don’t have the balance in it, you might achieve it, but you might miss something really a deep treasure. And the other piece is to weigh clearly, what do I have to offer to get me to that place? And so again, I talked a little bit about the difference between fantasy and we can get into a fantasy in our dreams and just become a dreamer. And that’s different than having a dream because a dreamer sometimes just imagine something happening and it’s going to come to them. The silver platter, the person’s going to come to the door and knock on the door. They’re going to have, you know, that million dollar check for the rest of your life every single year. That’s not a full reality. So what is the reality of your life that you apply to your dream or your dream can come true?

Lois

Oh, that is so good. Because it’s being aware. Yes. Looking out there. That’s just, that’s just awesome. So at the beginning of our podcast we asked you about your dreams. What dream do you have right now? I’ll share. One as Faith and I are exploring our next steps with our podcast. And mine is to write more and to be really invested in working to get our words and our thoughts out there and who knows what that will look like, but that is a dream and I’m starting to actually put vision to it. Like what will I look like when I’m sitting in writing, when we’re collaborating, when we’re putting this together and that makes it so much more of a reality.

Faith

You do have to see it and think about the investment of what it takes for a dream to be fulfilled. Getting current with your dream that is right in front of you for today, your dreams that are in front of you for the next year or the dreams you might have for into the future, all of your dreams, all the capacity of those dreams are very important to look at. There they are, how am I going to step into them.

Lois

Something we haven’t done in very many of our podcasts we’re going to do today. And we would love it if you might agree to get a notebook and for the next few days write down your dreams, whatever comes to you. Maybe it’s something you had at night, maybe it’s something you’re seeing during the day in the shower, whatever it is, and maybe you’ll even fill up an entire page today with all of the things you’ve been thinking about. But we would love it if you would consider writing down a dream or a set of dreams and sharing them with us on social media. You can find us on Facebook and on Twitter and on Instagram, and if you would be willing to share what that dream is, then we will commit next week to sharing with you – both Faith and myself. One dream that we write down and let’s see what happens when we actually start dreaming about some things in our lives and we share them with others.

Faith

The sharing is really critical. It can be the actual beginning of seeing something come to life.

Lois

So we encourage you if you’d be willing to do that and take some notes.

Faith

One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to look within and find what stirs your heart and follow that.

Lois

When you have that kind of passion, it changes how you think about yourself and how you are received by anyone near you who also wants that passion.

Faith

Please write down a dream a day for the next week and share those dreams on our Facebook or Twitter or Instagram pages.

Lois
